"... innate virtuosity ... the playing was full of energy and precision ..." - Soundboard magazine
A native of St. Petersburg, Russia, Grisha Goryachev is renowned for his extraordinary musical sensitivity and technical virtuosity in both classical and flamenco styles. Grisha is one of very few guitarists in the world who is reviving the tradition of solo flamenco guitar in a concert setting that was practiced by legendary flamenco masters such as Ramón Montoya and Sabicas. Grisha strives to keep alive older flamenco masterpieces that now exist only on records, by performing them in concerts. Instead of merely copying, he creates his own interpretations of these masterpieces, using dynamics and tone colors usually associated with classical guitar.
Grisha began playing guitar at the age of six, studying first with his father Dmitry, an acknowledged master teacher of the instrument. Leading an extensive career as a child prodigy at the age of nine, Grisha performed regularly before large audiences in the most prestigious concert halls in the Soviet Union. Following a tour of Spain, Grisha was invited to play for flamenco legend Paco de Lucía, who soon after personally intervened in support of his application for an American visa. In May 2005 Grisha was awarded the prize for Best Performance of Spanish Music at the VI International Classical Guitar Competition Julian Arcás in Almería, Spain.
Grisha received his Bachelor, Masters and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees from the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, where he studied under famous guitar virtuoso Eliot Fisk. He was one of the 30 people in 2006 to become a fellow of the prestigious Paul & Daisy Soros Fellowship, recognizing him as exceptional in his chosen field. A firm believer in exposing young generations to the beauty of classical and flamenco guitar, he likes to include outreach performances and workshops at schools as part of his concert tours.
Grisha's YouTube videos have collected over two million views. He has recorded two CDs: Alma Flamenca and Homenaje a Sabicas.

The Interaction of Tonality and Serialism in Henze's Royal Winter Music.
7:00 PM
Manhattan Theatre Club Creative Center
311 West 43rd St. between Eighth and Ninth Avenues (map)
New York City
Our October meeting will feature a special presentation Lars Frandsen of the Brooklyn College Conservatory of Music. The presentation will be followed by open playing time, so bring your guitar, or just come and listen. NYCCGS Member Events are free and open to all members and first-time guests.
About the presentation: Hans Werner Henze's Royal Winter Music has long been regarded as one of the most important solo guitar works of the twentieth century. Music based on Shakespeare abound in the opera and the ballet, but the portrayal of Shakespearean characters for a solo instrument is unique, even beyond the comparatively insular world of the classical guitar.
Henze was one of the first composers of the post-war generation to embrace serialism, and one of the first to also reject it as the sole premise of modern music. In Henze's music we find a lyricism, uncommon to contemporary music, that embraces both traditional tonality side by side with serialism. These disparate elements inform the sonatas throughout.
About the presenter: Lars Frandsen was a student of the late Leif Christensen, who was a pioneer in the rediscovery of nineteenth-century guitar literature and a strong advocate of its historical performance.
A graduate of the Royal Academy of Music in London, Yale University, and Eastman School of Music, Mr. Frandsen holds a doctoral degree in performance and literature. He was the assistant to renowned lute player Paul O'Dette while at Eastman, where he also studied in masterclasses and doctoral seminars with equally renowned forte-pianist Malcom Bilson. His principal guitar teachers after Leif Christensen include John Mills (Royal Academy of Music), Benjamin Verdery (Yale) and Nicholas Goluses (Eastman). Further, he has performed several times in masterclasses conducted by John Williams, David Russell and Manuel Barruecco.
Mr. Frandsen was the first guitarist to play and coach chamber music (during five consecutive concert seasons) at the Apple Hill summer music school with members of the London Symphony, New York Philharmonic, Chicago and Boston Symphony Orchestras. Mr. Frandsen is the Director of Guitar Studies at Brooklyn College Conservatory of Music at the City University of New York. He directs the Collegium Musicum at Nyack College's Manhattan campus, where he also teaches counterpoint, music history and theory.

"... an incredible facility on the instrument ... Yamandú Costa is a very special musician." - Classical Guitar magazine
Yamandú Costa was born in Brazil, where he began his guitar studies with his father when he was 7 years old. Later, he perfected his technique with Argentine virtuoso Lúcio Yanel. Until the age of 15, Yamandú's only music school was the folk music he heard from the south of Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay. He eventually began to study the music of renowned Brazilian musicians such as Baden Powell, Tom Jobim, and Raphael Rabello. When he was 17, he played for the first time in São Paulo at Circuito Cultural Banco do Brasil, which led to his immediate recognition as one of the most gifted guitar players in Brazil.
Now generally regarded as one of the foremost performers of Brazilian music, Yamandú's performances reveal the deep intimacy between him and his guitar. His music does not fit into a single music style; rather, he has created his own. His gave a memorable performance as part of the 92nd Street Y Guitar Marathon in 2008. His performance on the NYCCGS Concert Series will be his first full solo concert in the United States.

Since winning first prize at the Radio France International Competition in Paris in 1982, Czech guitarist Pavel Steidl has become one of the most widely celebrated soloists of his generation. In 1987, he emigrated to the Netherlands, where after years of study and inspiration, he created his own style, which incorporates both world music elements and authentic interpretation of 19th-century guitar literature on period instruments.
Also a composer, Pavel frequently performs his own works on his programs. He has performed in more than 40 countries, and was selected by the readers of the Italian magazine Guitart as the guitar player of the year for 2004.

Forged in Austin as a graduate student group in 2005, the Texas Guitar Quartet has firmly established a reputation as the premier guitar ensemble in Texas. Members Isaac Bustos, Jonathan Dotson, Alejandro Montiel and Joseph Williams II have individually garnered acclaim and critical praise in international guitar competitions and as soloists on concert stages around the world. With their talents combined, they display a virtuosic command of the guitar quartet medium. As a group, TxGQ claimed first prize with "Special Merit" in the 2006 edition of the Brownsville Guitar Ensemble Festival and Competition, one of the few competitions of its kind in the United States. An avid supporter of Texas-based composers, the group has premiered new works by Andrew Dickinson, Alfredo Barros, and Mark Anthony Cruz, who in 2010 wrote "Agitato and Departure" for the quartet.
