As Duo Erato, GFA Competition prizewinners Risa Carlson and Martha Masters blend virtuosity, elegance, and interpretive nuance into an evocative voice, in repertoire ranging from the Baroque to the contemporary. The NYCCGS is proud to present them on February 26 in a program of guitar duets spanning the Baroque to the contemporary with works by Bernardo Pasquini, Fernando Sor, Cesar Franck, Mario-Castelnuovo Tedesco, Mario Gangi, and others.

As Duo Erato, Risa Carlson and Martha Masters have performed across North America, drawing high praise for their lyrical and elegant musicianship. They blend their evocative individual voices - each was a prizewinner at the 2000 Guitar Foundation of America International Solo Competition - into an ensemble the Fort Worth Star-Telegram has described as "so tightly coordinated that it often seemed that the two women were playing a single instrument." Named for the muse of lyric poetry and music, Duo Erato has been active since their student days at Baltimore's Peabody Conservatory of Music; they gained wide recognition in 1994 as first prize winners in the National Guitar Summer Workshop Competition and as finalists in the Baltimore Chamber Music Awards. The duo released their debut recording Musings in 2005 on the GSP label. In addition to maintaining their active schedules as both chamber music and solo performers, the two are dedicated teachers, Risa at the Levine School of Music in Washington, D.C., and Martha at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles.
